Looking for guidance on settling in Canada – where should I start?

Hi everyone,

I’m new to this forum and currently trying to understand the best way to settle in Canada. There’s a lot of information online, and honestly, it can feel a bit overwhelming at times.

I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have already gone through the process or are in a similar situation.
Some things I’m curious about:

  • What resources helped you the most when you first arrived?

  • Any tips for newcomers when it comes to jobs, housing, or community support?

  • Things you wish you had known earlier?

Thanks in advance — looking forward to learning from this community

Hi there,

Thank you for sharing your question and situation with us. We hope that you find helpful information about settling to Ontario in this discussion forum community.

If you’ve received confirmation of permanent residence (COPR) and currently live abroad, you may be interested in pre-arrival services. Pre-arrival services provide information to help you learn about life in Canada, find employment, and access free settlement supports when you arrive. Some programs also offer profession (or destination) specific information, including language and essential workplace skills training. This can be a great way to start preparing for the moving process.

These services are usually provided by settlement service providers. Settlement services are free programs that help newcomers adjust to life in Canada. They include supports like language classes, job search help, and information about housing, healthcare, schools, and other community resources. These services will also be available when you arrive.

We hope that folks in the community can share their experiences with you, please follow up with us if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Your Settlement.Org Team
