Conjugal Sponsorship

Question.

On the Canada Government website it says that you can sponsor a person if it is a conjugal relationship (family sponsorship). Yet when we did the questionnaire the answer always came up as " you are not eligible to come to Canada at this point in time".

I’m not sure how to proceed.

We are not married, nor common law but we have been in a relationship for over a year. This person is a USA citizen. We visit each other regularly and want to be together but we don’t want to put an applications in if it is going to be flat out rejected.

Am I missing something here? I heard there are some exceptions to American people when it comes to immigration. If anyone could give me some advice that would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

According to our Settlement.Org How do I sponsor a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, or dependent child living outside of Canada? article.

You can find some detailed information regarding what is considered in a conjugal sponsorship in this IRCC OP 2 Processing Members of the Family Class Operations Manual.

You can find specific information in the following sections:

5.25. Characteristics of conjugal relationships
5.26. Assessment of conjugal relationships

It is quite a bit of information for us to copy to this thread so we suggest that you go to the manual itself and read those sections.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
