Hello; I am wondering when someone comes into Canada as a Conventional Refugee are they given a temp SIN or do they need to apply for SIN.
Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
Overseas Convention refugees arrive in Canada with Permanent Resident Status.
This means that they can apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) that is not a temporary number.
Syrian Refugees be Permanent Residents and get their SIN processed immediately.
After completing the border services process upon arrival at a Canadian Port of Entry (Toronto or Montreal in the case of Syrians), the refugees will be permanent residents of Canada and will continue onto a welcome centre. Refugees arriving at the welcome centre will receive winter clothing, and be issued their Social Insurance Number (SIN).
For information on applying for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) you can read our Settlement.Org What documents do I need to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN)? article.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
