PR card has wrong nationality written on it

Hi, we received our PR cards few days ago and found out that my son’s nationality is written same as his country in which he was born. Rest all of us, have PR cards with correct nationality. Will it create problem in moving out and re entering into Canada? Do we need to send application to IRCC for reissuance of card? His COPR details were correct, so don’t know which documents to be sent and to make request for landing amendment or not. Please help..

Hi there,

Thank you for sharing your question and situation with us, we appreciate your interest in this information.

According to the IRCC’s Help Centre article, What should I do if my new permanent resident card has a mistake or something is missing?

If we made the mistake, you can apply for a reissued permanent resident (PR) card.

If either your given name or your surname has more than 28 letters, the name appearing on the PR card will be shortened. This is not a mistake and the card will not be reissued to change the name.

You may want to read over guide IMM 5530 for instructions on requesting to Reissue a Permanent Resident Card (PR Card)

Your PR Card will be corrected and reissued with the correct information if the error was made by us when you either:

  • applied to come to Canada as a permanent resident; or
  • submitted an application for a PR card. In this case, all supporting documents must have been submitted and accepted by IRCC.

Your reissued PR Card should reflect your Record of Landing or Confirmation of Permanent Residence or your approved Request to Amend the Immigration Record of Landing or Confirmation of Permanent Residence form (IMM 1436), if applicable.

It sounds like your son’s nationality is correctly written on the COPR document, so this request should meet the criteria of reissuing his PR card to reflect his COPR documents accurately. Please keep in mind that you must submit a request to reissue your PR card within 60 days after receiving your PR Card (if the required correction is already reflected on your Record of Landing or Confirmation of Permanent Residence).

Requests to re-issue PR cards are processed on a priority basis. If you do not have a PR card in time for your travel plans, you may want to consider applying for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD), Permanent residents (PR) of Canada must carry and show their valid permanent resident card (PR card) or permanent resident travel document (PRTD) when boarding a flight to Canada, or travelling to Canada on any other commercial carrier.

You may also wish to consult a reputable and registered immigration consultant or an immigration lawyer about this situation. If you require immediate assistance, it may be helpful to contact IRCC directly for further information.

We hope this information is helpful. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to share them with us.

Sincerely,

Your Settlement.Org Team
