OHIP Denial for Pregnant Wife Despite Sponsorship in Progress

Hello,

I am reaching out in deep need of urgent support and guidance.

My wife is currently in Canada on a visitor visa, and we’ve already applied for her inland spousal sponsorship. We received the Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR), which, according to the Ontario government website, makes her eligible to apply for OHIP.

However, when we went to Service Ontario with all the correct documents listed online, the agent refused to process her OHIP application. I was shocked and confused. I later spoke with another agent who discreetly admitted the first agent simply didn’t want to issue it. This experience has left me feeling helpless and deeply frustrated.

To make matters worse, my wife is 13 to 14 weeks pregnant. I’ve been told her labour alone could cost at least $10,000. As a young couple, we cannot afford that. I am a Canadian citizen and a federal public servant, yet despite doing everything right, I feel like I’m hitting a wall at every turn. I am losing sleep every night from the fear and stress.

I am reaching out to your organization with hope—hope that someone can help us navigate this situation, advocate on our behalf, or at least point us in the right direction. I am truly desperate and afraid my wife may be left without the care she needs.

Please, if there is anything you can do, or anyone you can connect me with, I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

Sincerely,
Yasir

Hi Yasir,

Thank you for sharing your question and situation with us.

If your wife is eligible for OHIP, and has been denied coverage, you could appeal this decision with the Health Services Appeal and Review Board.

In the meantime, as a person without OHIP, you may also want to consider your other options for financing care. You may find helpful information in low-cost care and private health insurance section on Settlement.Org. There is also more information about prenatal care options in Ontario in the article, I am pregnant and don’t have OHIP. What health care can I get?.

We hope this information is helpful. Please follow up with us if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Your Settlement.Org team
