Mental Health Diagnosis and the PR/Citizenship Process

I am a newcomer being sponsored by my spouse. I am looking for support with my mental health, and I am considering pursuing a diagnosis. Since there is a section on PR and Citizenship applications asking to disclose my mental health status, I have a few questions:

  • Can a mental health diagnosis negatively affect my immigration process?
  • Do I have to answer these sections correctly?
  • If I do not disclose my diagnosis or the status of my mental health, can IRCC find out? and will I be penalized?

Hi there,

Thank you for sharing your question and situation with us. We appreciate your interest in this information.

PBSC student volunteers are drafting a response with legal information that should be helpful. If you require immediate assistance, it may be helpful to contact IRCC directly for further information. You may also wish to seek the advice of a reputable and registered immigration consultant or an immigration lawyer about your situation.
