Landing & Leaving - Jeopardize our Status?

Hi there,

My family and I are Permanent Residents of Canada. I am the principal applicant.

We landed last March 24, 2016.

However, I am still intending to leave Canada to finish off my work outside Canada and settle our properties there (my wife and my child will remain in Canada).

So I will be outside Canada from April 2016 to January 2017 (9 months).

After then, I will permanently reside and work in Toronto.

My questions are:

(a) Will living outside of Canada for 9 months after just a short landing jeopardize my PR and my intended citizenship?

(b) Will my child still receive child care benefit even if I (the principal) live outside of Canada?

Would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks,

Hi

  1. No, as long as you reside in Canada for 2 year out of every 5 year period after you “land”
  2. Time outside Canada doesn’t count towards citizenship.
  3. For your child to receive Child benefits, you have to report your earnings outside Canada.
