Child Benefit for Non PR Child

Hello there,

My wife, daughter and I are Canadian PR. My younger child was born outside Canada and came to Canada with TRV (visit visa). We are living in Ontario.

My question is …

Is he eligible for child benefit like my other PR child before his PR application is decided?

According to the the Canada child tax benefit Call Centre, the only status requirements in the application are for the parents who are applying for the benefit.

You can find this information on the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website.

Here is an excerpt,

You or your spouse or common-law partner must be:

-a Canadian citizen;
-a permanent resident (as defined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act);
-a protected person (as defined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act); or
-a temporary resident (as defined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act) who has lived in Canada throughout the previous 18 months, and who has a valid permit in the 19th month other than one that states “does not confer status” or “does not confer temporary resident status.” If this is your situation, do not apply before the 19th month.

They stated that your child does not have to be a Permanent Resident.

We strongly suggest that it is best that you contact the Canada child tax benefit Call Centre directly to confirm this information.
