I have just secured an expatriate work in Egypt running the supply chain of an American Consumer goods giant. The contract will be for 2years minimum. It’s also likely that I land in Ontario for the PN program with my family during this time to get the PR card and then go back to my contract.

  1. How does our living and working in another country affect the Permanent Residency obligations for Ontario?
  2. If my family stays/settles in Ontario while I’m out of Canada providing for them until I secure a position in Ontario, is this considered acceptable for residency?
  3. Anybody with similar experience that can share ?

Just for clarification, when you mention the “PN program” are you referring to the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP)?

  1. The live you spend living and working outside of Canada cannot be counted towards the residency obligation. It will be counted as time outside of Canada. Note that you must live in Canada for 2 out of every 5 rolling years to keep your PR status.
  2. This will allow your family to meet the residency obligation and keep their PR status valid - but not you. You will still have to meet the 2 out of every 5 year residency obligation on your own to keep your PR status.
