HI, I’m Mexican and my husband is Canadian. We were married in Ottawa. I’ve been living in Ottawa 7 months so far, waiting for my PR application to be processed. I received a notice in August that my PR file has been received and is being processed.
I’ve read on many forums that I can apply for OHIP after my file has begun processing and after I’ve been given a case number. I’m now 2 months pregnant. We’ve spoken with many insurance companies, and the insurance companies will not cover deliveries due to it being a per-existing condition. Our appointments have already cost $300. Next will be the ultrasound which we’ve heard can be upwards of $500. Given that the PR process has started, will I be eligible for OHIP so the birth won’t cost us $10,000?
Assuming you applied for PR using the inland route - you will qualify for OHIP once you have AIP/first stage approval. It’s currently taking 17 months to reach first stage approval from time the application is submitted. Until then you will have to pay for the costs out of your own pocket. You can reduce your costs by opting to have a home birth with the assistance of a midwife.
