eTA required?

I have had my permanent residence approved and I will be flying into Toronto for the first time to get my COPR signed by the immigration officials. Do I need to get an eTA before I travel? Or do I just need my passport and COPR? Thanks!

Hi there,

Thank you for sharing your question and situation with us, we appreciate your interest in this information.

Summary:
It is our understanding that you should not need an eTA if you are approved for permanent residence, as an eFoil will be automatically issued to you, serving as a replacement for the eTA.

Explanation:

According to the Canada Border Services Agency:
https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trans/guide-eng.html#s4b

Foreign nationals from visa-required countries will be issued a PR Visa to allow them to board their flight to Canada.

Foreign nationals from eTA countries will be issued a document called an eFoil (it’s like an eTA email) that will allow them to board their flight to Canada.

In addition to the PR visa counterfoil or eFoil, a foreign national travelling to Canada to become a PR must also have a passport, other than a diplomatic, official or similar passport, that was issued by the country of which the foreign national is a citizen or national.

We hope this information is helpful. You may also wish to consult a reputable and registered immigration consultant or an immigration lawyer who is familiar with Canadian immigration issues for advice on your situation, and please let us know if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Your Settlement.Org team
